The proposed West Yorkshire Mayoral arrangements are a step in the wrong direction for our region for a number of reasons:
This deal is flawed & undemocratic. No matter whoever the public elected any Mayor will have their hands tied by the five Labour leaders of West Yorkshire Local Authorities, who could overrule and amend keys decisions like the Mayor's budget. The current arrangements would see the removal of the elected Police & Crime Commissioner and replace it with a party political appointment.
We already said NO to an elected Mayor. As recent as 2012 residents in Wakefield District voted against having an elected Mayor, with almost two thirds of voters rejecting the idea, yet now we face having one forced upon us anyway.
It's not free & who no-one knows how much it will cost. At a time when many residents already feel they are paying more council tax and receiving fewer services, we now face a having to fund a mayors staff and their pet projects. The deal with give the Mayor the power to issue a mayoral council tax precept & also the potential to charge a business rate supplement too.
